Malgré une natalité en berne, une Japonaise sur cinq est victime de harcèlement pendant sa grossesse. Que diable se passe-t-il au pays du soleil levant ? Enquête sur un véritable enjeu de civilisation.

« Si tu te souciais vraiment du bien de l’entreprise, tu ne serais pas tombée enceinte. » Décochée par son chef, la flèche lui est allée droit dans le ventre. C’était il y a deux ans. Itsuno travaillait alors comme commerciale pour une imprimerie dans le bouillonnant quartier de Shinjuku, à Tokyo. Enceinte de deux mois, la jeune femme de 22 ans venait de demander à son supérieur d’aménager ses horaires de travail pour éviter la folie des heures de pointe du métro. « Je vivais à quarante minutes de mon travail et la ligne que je prenais tous les jours était vraiment bondée. Cela me faisait peur et je craignais que cela n’affecte ma grossesse », raconte aujourd’hui la Japonaise d’une voix posée, assise dans un café de la banlieue est de la capitale nippone. A l’époque, et avant qu’elle ne fournisse un certificat de santé, ses supérieurs balaient sa requête. « Ils m’ont dit que c’était très égoïste de ma part d’exiger cela. Le président m’a posé trois fois la question: « Mais pourquoi tu ne démissionnes pas ? » En fait, le problème n’était pas que je demande un aménagement d’emploi du temps, décrypte-t-elle, mais plutôt que je sois enceinte. »
